Greensboro Crew Wins Inaugural Duel With High Point


Lake Brandt, Greensboro, NC – Greensboro Crew showed speed and form on a glorious spring morning to win the inaugural cross-town duel over High Point today.

After racing most of the spring season under the combined HPG Rowing umbrella, the squads broke up by training base location for the two clubs’ first official racing encounter.

With Greensboro still in its first year of racing it was agreed that the races would be between middle school and novice rowers, who are in their first year of rowing. Greensboro Crew boated two crews for the race while High Point had one.

The distance was 1,250 meters.

All three crews jumped out quickly and evenly of at the start. However, within 200 meters one of the Greensboro Crews experienced a near boat stopping crab, which all but ruled them out of contention.

The other Greensboro Crew, coxed by Ella Nichols, did not miss a beat and capitalized on the distraction by taking a enthusiastic move on High Point and pulled ahead to a half boat length lead.

The margin between High Point and Greensboro stayed relatively the same as the crews raced down Lake Brandt toward a rapidly approaching finish line.

Sensing the thrill of victory in the final 200 meters Greensboro Crew raised their cadence in a brilliant burst of speed to win by open water.

The winning Greensboro Crew boat was comprised of coxswain Ella Nichols, stroke Ryan LaPierre, Hadley Cowan, Corinne Alt, Kate Messick, Kennedi Ratcliffe, Kate Cole, Grace Denenny, and Keagan O’Connell,

After the initial race all three crews turned around and competed for an additional race over 500m. The winning Greensboro Crew from the previous race locked oars with High Point in the first 10 strokes but the coaches allowed the race to continue.

Ella Nichols’ Greensboro Crew was the quicker boat to recover and soon both crews were quickly making chase against the other leading Greensboro Crew.

Ella’s crew found the speed needed to win the race with the second Greensboro Crew in second place in an almost dead heat with High Point.

The inaugural duel between High Point and Greensboro was all for fun…OK and maybe a little pride as well : )

Registration is Open for Youth Summer Rowing

Lake Brandt Marina, Greensboro, NC – Join the fun on the water at Lake Brandt this Summer! The 2017 Summer Youth Rowing program is for high school & middle school girls and boys of all experience levels (including no experience) to row during the summer.

COST: $285 This fee covers equipment use, lake fees, coaching services, administrative costs (insurance, etc). The summer season is June 5 thru August 19.

WHERE: Lake Brandt Marina 5945 Lake Brandt Rd, Greensboro, NC 27455

WHEN: Initially during the week from June 5-9 rowing sessions will take place in the afternoons from 4:30pm until 6:15pm and at 9am on Saturday mornings. On June 12 rowing sessions then move to mornings Monday – Saturday from 7:15am – 9:00am each day to avoid the heat.

Please note there is no rowing on Tuesdays because the lake is closed.

Greensboro Rowers Shine at State Championships

HPG Rowing enjoyed great success at the inaugural North Carolina Youth Rowing Championships. Rowers from the High Point Greensboro club won state championships in 7 out of the 14 events the club entered. Pictured here is the middle school squad or rowers.

High Point, NC – Greensboro Crew enjoyed a terrific day of racing at the North Carolina Youth Rowing Championships at Oak Hollow Lake on Saturday.

Racing with High Point under the HPG Rowing umbrella, Greensboro rowers won state championships in the boys U15 eight-oared event and the Middleschool Division I eight oared event.

The HPG boys U15 eight led from wire to wire over the 1,500m championship race course, ultimately finishing four boat lengths ahead of Triangle Rowing Club of Raleigh. Phillip Sojka steered his crew of stroke Ben Huitt, 7 Henry Parker, 6 Ryan LaPierre, Jeffrey Shroyer, 4 Isaac Gates, Nate Dorn, Keagan OConnell and bow Sarvesh Venkittu to the winning time of 6 minutes 58 seconds.

HPG finished a close second to Triangle Rowing Club in the girls U15 eight-oared event. Coxswain Ella Nichols encouraged her crew of Claire Howard, Charlotte Curri, Sierra, Heer, Kennedi Ratcliffe, Kate Messick, Abby Higgins, Sydney Briggs and Katie Todd all the way down the race course to earn the silver medal ahead of Asheville.

HPG also took home silver in the girls Division II U15 eights final. The crew, steered by Phillip Sojka was comprised of Maura Toole,  Maddie Van Weerdhuizen, Natalie Earnhardt, Ellie Schroeder, Emma Knapp, Elizabeth Parker, Reagan Labiak, and Lia Peace.

In the Middle school Division I final, HPG Rowing showed power and poise as it raced down Oak Hollow Lake in front of Festival Park. Coxswain Ella Nichols’ straight line course left nothing to chance as her crew of Matthew Hronich, Henry Parker, Ryan LaPierre, Jeffrey Shroyer, James Li, Sierra Heer, Ben Huitt and Grace Denenny rowed away from Triangle Rowing Club and Asheville for gold.

Just moments earlier, High Point Greensboro rowers finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the Division II Middle school race. Triangle won and Asheville finished 5th.

Maggie McIntyre steered her crew of Claire Howard, Sarvesh Venkittu, Tyrus Martin, Nate Dorn, Isaac Gates, Keagan OConnell, Holly Spong and Corinne Alt to the silver medal.

Reagan Labiak steered her crew of Kate Messick, Sophie Bene, Abby Shea, Anna Hicks, Aydin Hall, Abby Higgins, Kennedit Ratcliffe and Jamie Atkinson to the bronze.

In a tight finish, Elizabeth Parker steered her crew of Maddie Vanweerdhuizen, Hayden Gentry, Isaac Sparro, Rachel Lesser, Gavyn Azar, Emily Nagel, Natalie Earnhardt, and Roshan Sundaram to the fourth place finish.

Greensboro rowers also race in the women’s novice eight and fours events on Saturday in High Point. Novice events are for first year rowers. The novice 4 rowers also raced in the eight-oared crew comprised of coxswain Ella Nichols, stroke Caroline Dau, Grace Michel, Mary Blake Murphy, Madie Gentry, Kate Cole, Kendall Knight, Hadley Cowan, and bowman Eva Keel.

“Our Greensboro rowers were fabulous on Saturday,” said club founder Gene Kininmonth. “The club has made a successful coaching transition at Lake Brandt and I would like to express my gratitude to coaches Britney Kelley, Molly McDonald, and Patrick Kinsella-McClelland for their contributions to lift this rowing squad to new heights in such a positive manner.”

All our rowers were Oarsome on Saturday. Congratulations to our newly minted state champions and medalists and everyone who participated in their first ever race!

Youth Rowing Open House Coming Up on Saturday

Lake Brandt, Greensboro – Greensboro Crew will host a free Open House for high school and middle school students (ages 12+) to learn more about the sport and meet members of the team at 9am on Saturday, April 15.

Use 5945 Lake Brandt Rd, Greensboro, NC 27455 for GPS directions. This will bring you into the lake entrance and our boats are on the right hands side of the parking lot. Participants should arrive on time and expect to stay 90 minutes. Wear flip flops and clothing suitable for the weather on the day.

“Rowing is one of the most beautiful sports imaginable,” says club founder Gene Kininmonth. “There is this zen like rhythm to rowing that makes it a deeply personal experience and yet one of the ultimate team sports at the same time.”

The Greensboro Crew youth program has competitive boys and girls rowing crews, making it the ideal cross over sport for serious athletes and students just looking for a new sport.

Rowers Return to Lake Brandt on Saturday

Lake Brandt, Greensboro – Greensboro Crew youth rowers will return to the water for the first time in 2017 on Saturday morning. The first practice is scheduled for 11:30am and expected to conclude at 1pm.

New members are welcome and must be at least 12 years old and in 6th grade.  No prior experience is necessary. See the REGISTER page for waiver and swim forms which must be signed by a parent of a new rower and brought to the lake.

Rowers should wear layers of clothing as it is expected to be cool.

Purchasing the complete order online qualifies a rower for the team discount. Items may be purchased individually and should be paid for by check to “Greensboro Crew”.

Free Sneak Peek Week. Try Youth Rowing for Free!

If you are in grades 6-10, and maybe looking for a spring sport then this is your chance to give rowing a try for free. Five days of indoor rowing in Jamestown – you can come to one practice or all five. Just register and show up. It is that easy!

This spring up to 60 high school and middle school students will be part of our competitive rowing program at Lake Brandt. This Sneak Peek will give you a head start on learning about rowing to see if the sport is for you.

No experience necessary but you must be able to swim as a safety precaution if you join the team. Participants must be at least 12 years of age.

WHAT? Sneak Peek Week is one week of indoor rowing, where students will become acquainted with the Concept II rowing machine (called ‘ergs’) and learn the technique needed for rowing in racing boats on the water.

WHEN? 4:30pm to 6pm on Monday, 2/6 though Friday 2/10.

WHERE? The Erg Room: 124C Wade Street in Jamestown.

COST? FREE!

Would you like to make history by being part of the first spring rowing season in Greensboro? The rowing is about to begin!

Greensboro Crew is an organized scholastic rowing program that focuses on the amazing transformational impacts that the sport of crew can deliver to young people.

Rowing will develop the body and mind, but training and racing with a crew team will develop character. We strive to be the very best rowing team in the Southeast.

The youth program consists of middle and high school students, ages 12-18, from Greensboro/Summerfield/Oak Ridge area schools. You can attend any school, public or private, and still row for Greensboro Crew. 

No experience is necessary and new rowers can join anytime.

The program aims to develop extremely competitive boys and girls crews that compete locally and nationally. But we are first and foremost recreational and will help you go at your own pace.

Rowing begins in Februray!

Greensboro Rowers Celebrate Career of Olympic Champion Caroline Lind

Caroline Lind was inducted into the Triad Rowers’ Hall of Fame on November 19, 2016.

High Point, NC – Greensboro Crew rowers and parents joined almost 200 rowers from High Point Rowing Club, Wake Forest University Rowing, and High Point University Rowing at High Point Country Club on Saturday night to induct double Olympic gold medalist Caroline Lind into the Triad Rowers’ Hall of Fame.

The occasion was the Celebration of Rowing banquet, an annual dinner to show appreciation for the sport of rowing and the local Triad rowing community. Celebration of Rowing is the one time each year when the Triad rowing community gathers to honor its own and enjoy hearing from a keynote speaker who has made a national impact on the sport of rowing.

Jack Carlson, author, archaeologist, and national team rower served as guest speaker at this year’s prestigious gala. Jack is a three-time member of the United States national rowing team. He is also the author of the acclaimed book Rowing Blazers and on Saturday evening he gave a riveting presentation on the many traditions and secrets of club rowing social attire.

Jack Carlson continued a banquet tradition of introducing world renowned rowing leaders to the Triad. Cutting edge rowing boat maker, Misha Joukowsky, spoke in 2015 and Caroline Lind was the inaugural guest speaker in 2014.

Also honored at the banquet was Greensboro masters rower and Crew Mum, Julie Higgins. Julie was presented with the Julie Higgins Cup, a perpetual award which will be presented annually to a Greensboro crew parent for service to the youth program.

But the highlight of the night was the induction of Caroline Lind into the Triad Rowers’ Hall of Fame.

Gene Kininmonth, the founder of both Greensboro Crew and High Point Rowing Club, enjoyed the honor of making the proclamation statement for Lind’s official induction.

Lind, a Greensboro native won two Olympic gold medals – first at the Beijing Games in 2008 in the United States women’s eight-oared crew and then again at the London Games in 2012. Lind also won world championship titles for the USA in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2014.

She was declared the World’s Female Rower of the Year in 2014 by FISA, the international governing body of the sport.
