High Point-Greensboro Rowing will celebrate its 5th birthday on Saturday, September 16 with a Bridge to Bridge Time Trial for club members followed by a potluck breakfast at Oak Hollow Lake. Students will be boated by their class year and masters by age.
Families and friends are invited to join the rowers for the potluck brunch after the boat races.

The club has much to celebrate after 5 years, with a record number of rowers joining the Masters program for adults and the scholastic program for students from public and private schools across the Triad. This past year the club won 7 state championships, earned its first medals at youth Regionals, and made historic first time appearances at both youth and masters nationals.
Last year 9 eight-man crews as well as some smaller boats lined the start of the race course at Skeet Club Bridge to race the full extent of Oak Hollow Lake to Johnson Street Bridge and club founder Gene Kininmonth predicts there could be more crews this year.
All rowers participating in the Crew’s 5th Anniversary Boat Races should arrive at Oak Hollow Lake by 7:30am and be dressed appropriately for the weather on the day. Rowers and families should park on the grass behind the sailboats. A Signup Genius email will be sent to all members and parents with details of the potluck.
All participating rowers will receive the HPG Spirit shirt to race in on Saturday upon arrival.

WHEN: The middle school spring season runs from August 28 through to November 2. Rowing sessions are offered Monday & Thursday afternoons from 4:15pm until 6:15pm and on Saturday mornings from 9:00am – 11am.

RACING: In the Fall of 2017 the Middle School squad will race at the Anniversary Row on September 16 in High Point, the High Point Autumn Rowing Festival on September 30, the Head of the James in Richmond on October 14 and the Head of the South on November 11. Please note, it is not mandatory that students participate in all races.
WHAT TO WEAR: Students should wear normal athletic attire suitable for the weather and flip flops rather than running shoes as participants will walk the boat into the water.
This program is designed for students in Grades 6 – 8. No experience is necessary but participants must be confident swimmers for safety reasons. New members must have a parent complete the waiver and swim form found on the registration page.

Where does the team row? The team rows at beautiful Lake Brandt.
Are all practices mandatory?
No. So, if you cannot make it to all practice sessions that is OK. Keep in mind that like anything in life you only get out of something what you put into it. We find that the longer our rowers are on the team the more committed they become. If you cannot make a practice on a certain day please ask the coach if you can row on a different day instead.
Does everyone get to race?
Everyone who regularly attends rowing practice gets to race. A student will not be eligible to race if he/she has missed so practices that their rowing ability is deemed by the coaches to potentially have a negative affect the performance of their fellow rowers.
What if I missed the first day?
No problem. Just email Coach Gene with the date you are available to begin. Some of our rowers do not begin until late September.
Greensboro rowers are delighted with their silver medal performance at the 2016 Head of the South regatta.
GREENSBORO, NC – Greensboro Crew has hired Olympic rower Lisa Schlenker, who has previously coached the University of Wisconsin and the United States U23 national team.
Coach Schlenker will have a “signature role” on the club’s youth program and guiding its current coaches.
Schlenker served on ten U.S.A. national teams winning three world championship silver medals during her career as a lightweight rower. In 2004 she represented the United States in the women’s lightweight double scull at the Olympic Games in Athens. Off the water, Schlenker has broken three world records on the Concept II ergometer rowing machine, two of which still stand today in age related categories.
Upon retiring from international rowing, Schlenker went on to coach rowers at both the international and collegiate levels. At the University of Wisconsin, she served as head coach of the women’s lightweight squad, where her crews won 5 medals at the national championships.
Coach Schlenker. says she is thrilled to be joining the coaching staff and community of rowers in Greensboro. “I hope that my love for this sport will be a vessel of enthusiasm for those choosing to join the Greensboro crew family. Lake Brandt, Greensboro, NC – Greensboro Crew showed speed and form on a glorious spring morning to win the inaugural cross-town duel over High Point today.
After racing most of the spring season under the combined HPG Rowing umbrella, the squads broke up by training base location for the two clubs’ first official racing encounter.
With Greensboro still in its first year of racing it was agreed that the races would be between middle school and novice rowers, who are in their first year of rowing. Greensboro Crew boated two crews for the race while High Point had one.
The distance was 1,250 meters.
All three crews jumped out quickly and evenly of at the start. However, within 200 meters one of the Greensboro Crews experienced a near boat stopping crab, which all but ruled them out of contention.
The other Greensboro Crew, coxed by Ella Nichols, did not miss a beat and capitalized on the distraction by taking a enthusiastic move on High Point and pulled ahead to a half boat length lead.
The margin between High Point and Greensboro stayed relatively the same as the crews raced down Lake Brandt toward a rapidly approaching finish line.
Sensing the thrill of victory in the final 200 meters Greensboro Crew raised their cadence in a brilliant burst of speed to win by open water.
The winning Greensboro Crew boat was comprised of coxswain Ella Nichols, stroke Ryan LaPierre, Hadley Cowan, Corinne Alt, Kate Messick, Kennedi Ratcliffe, Kate Cole, Grace Denenny, and Keagan O’Connell,
Greensboro Crew snatches victory over High Point in the inaugural duel on Lake Brandt.
After the initial race all three crews turned around and competed for an additional race over 500m. The winning Greensboro Crew from the previous race locked oars with High Point in the first 10 strokes but the coaches allowed the race to continue.
Ella Nichols’ Greensboro Crew was the quicker boat to recover and soon both crews were quickly making chase against the other leading Greensboro Crew.
Ella’s crew found the speed needed to win the race with the second Greensboro Crew in second place in an almost dead heat with High Point.
The inaugural duel between High Point and Greensboro was all for fun…OK and maybe a little pride as well : )
Lake Brandt Marina, Greensboro, NC – Join the fun on the water at Lake Brandt this Summer! The 2017 Summer Youth Rowing program is for high school & middle school girls and boys of all experience levels (including no experience) to row during the summer.
COST: $285 This fee covers equipment use, lake fees, coaching services, administrative costs (insurance, etc). The summer season is June 5 thru August 19.

High Point, NC – Greensboro Crew enjoyed a terrific day of racing at the North Carolina Youth Rowing Championships at Oak Hollow Lake on Saturday.
Racing with High Point under the HPG Rowing umbrella, Greensboro rowers won state championships in the boys U15 eight-oared event and the Middleschool Division I eight oared event.
The HPG boys U15 eight led from wire to wire over the 1,500m championship race course, ultimately finishing four boat lengths ahead of Triangle Rowing Club of Raleigh. Phillip Sojka steered his crew of stroke Ben Huitt, 7 Henry Parker, 6 Ryan LaPierre, Jeffrey Shroyer, 4 Isaac Gates, Nate Dorn, Keagan OConnell and bow Sarvesh Venkittu to the winning time of 6 minutes 58 seconds.
HPG finished a close second to Triangle Rowing Club in the girls U15 eight-oared event. Coxswain Ella Nichols encouraged her crew of Claire Howard, Charlotte Curri, Sierra, Heer, Kennedi Ratcliffe, Kate Messick, Abby Higgins, Sydney Briggs and Katie Todd all the way down the race course to earn the silver medal ahead of Asheville.
HPG also took home silver in the girls Division II U15 eights final. The crew, steered by Phillip Sojka was comprised of Maura Toole, Maddie Van Weerdhuizen, Natalie Earnhardt, Ellie Schroeder, Emma Knapp, Elizabeth Parker, Reagan Labiak, and Lia Peace.
In the Middle school Division I final, HPG Rowing showed power and poise as it raced down Oak Hollow Lake in front of Festival Park. Coxswain Ella Nichols’ straight line course left nothing to chance as her crew of Matthew Hronich, Henry Parker, Ryan LaPierre, Jeffrey Shroyer, James Li, Sierra Heer, Ben Huitt and Grace Denenny rowed away from Triangle Rowing Club and Asheville for gold.
Just moments earlier, High Point Greensboro rowers finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the Division II Middle school race. Triangle won and Asheville finished 5th.
Maggie McIntyre steered her crew of Claire Howard, Sarvesh Venkittu, Tyrus Martin, Nate Dorn, Isaac Gates, Keagan OConnell, Holly Spong and Corinne Alt to the silver medal.
Reagan Labiak steered her crew of Kate Messick, Sophie Bene, Abby Shea, Anna Hicks, Aydin Hall, Abby Higgins, Kennedit Ratcliffe and Jamie Atkinson to the bronze.
In a tight finish, Elizabeth Parker steered her crew of Maddie Vanweerdhuizen, Hayden Gentry, Isaac Sparro, Rachel Lesser, Gavyn Azar, Emily Nagel, Natalie Earnhardt, and Roshan Sundaram to the fourth place finish.
Greensboro rowers also race in the women’s novice eight and fours events on Saturday in High Point. Novice events are for first year rowers. The novice 4 rowers also raced in the eight-oared crew comprised of coxswain Ella Nichols, stroke Caroline Dau, Grace Michel, Mary Blake Murphy, Madie Gentry, Kate Cole, Kendall Knight, Hadley Cowan, and bowman Eva Keel.

Lake Brandt, Greensboro – Greensboro Crew will host a free Open House for high school and middle school students (ages 12+) to learn more about the sport and meet members of the team at 9am on Saturday, April 15.
