Duke Rowing Coach Cooke Carcagno to Give Keynote Address at Celebration of Rowing Banquet

World rowing champion and Duke University women’s rowing head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno will be the guest speaker at this year’s Celebration of Rowing banquet.

The 5th annual Celebration of Rowing banquet, hosted by the Triad United Rowing Association will take place at 6pm on Saturday, November 17, at Sedgefield Country Club.

“Coach Megan Cooke Carcagno’s life story in this sport is story of inspiration and a lesson in commitment,” says banquet Chair Jackie King. “We always look for a guest speaker who has made an impact on the international stage with a local connection. We are so honored to have her joining us to speak on this occasion.”

FROM ROWING NEWS MAGAZINE – “Megan Cooke Carcagno has, by all accounts, been successful. A member of four U.S. national teams (2004-2007), she has the world championship and World Rowing Cup medals to show for it. She was in the U.S. women’s eight that began the streak of international gold medals that has extended 11 years and counting. She has coached at all levels—junior, masters, club, collegiate—and taken her teams to their own pinnacles of success. It was no surprise, then, when she sought another level of achievement, both for herself and for the team she joined in the summer of 2015 as head coach: Duke women’s rowing.”

The Celebration of Rowing banquet is an social event for recognizing an appreciation for our sport and our local rowing community. Celebration of Rowing is the one time each year when the Triad rowing community gathers to honor its own and enjoy hearing from a keynote speaker who has made a national impact on the sport of rowing.

Dress code: Cocktail attire with ‘team colors’.

Coach Cooke Carcagno will follow a talented line of speakers in recent years who have each had a national impact on the rowing community:

2014 Caroline Lind, 2X Olympic gold medalist from Greensboro

2015 Misha Joukowsky, Resolute shells

Generous Club Support Provides New Shell at Head of the Hooch

Greensboro youth rowers point with excitement to the new quad shell purchased for the team in Chattanooga on Sunday.

A rising tide raises all ships and in 2018 an increase in generous giving by the Greensboro Crew family provided the funds for the club to purchase a new shell at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga this past weekend.

Friends and family of the Greensboro rowers have contributed over $16,000 for fleet upgrades this year. Over the summer the club purchased a used eight, coxed four, two double sculls, motor boat engine and a boat trailer with a portion of the gifts.

The new shell is a quad scull from Swift USA, acquired for $14,900. The club was able to buy the boat for $5,000 under list price as it had been test rowed by another crew racing over the weekend.

“We have gone quite a bit over our equipment budget this year but this was well worth it given the opportunity we had to buy this boat,” says club founder Gene Kininmonth.

The boat is the newest version of two quad sculls that Greensboro’s sister club, High Point Rowing Club, has raced with great success over the past several seasons.

Greensboro assistant coach Katie Ognovich says the boat is the perfect fit for the current needs of Greensboro’s rowers.

“The team is really excited about this new boat,” says Coach Katie. “It will provide us with a top of the line racing opportunity for both our youth rowers and Masters. It will also allow for an additional scrimmaging opportunity with High Point.”

The team’s next fundraising goals are for sculling oars ($5,000), and a cargo trailer wrapped with logo ($6,500) for hauling supplies such as tents and cooking equipment to races. Kininmonth says he hopes to purchase a second quad scull for intrasquad competition in 2019.

Greensboro Crew Shines in Crosstown Duel with High Point

Oak Hollow Lake, High Point, NC – Greensboro Crew opened racing against High Point with a win in the varsity boys fours event on Saturday and closed out the morning with a middle school victory.

And along the way the team’s varsity girls squad also showed how far they have progressed with an outstanding performance as well.

From left Ben Huitt, Henry Parker, EJ Hisaw, Ben Stewart and coxswain Eleah Stewart.

Both squads should have been racing as Triad United at the Head of the James in Richmond on Saturday. That is, until Hurricane Michael struck with such heavy rainfall the James River was flooded and the regatta was cancelled.

So, High Point and Greensboro made the most of the situation with a cross-town duel.

“It was unfortunate we were not able to race at the James this weekend, but the entire team made the best of it!” said Greensboro head coach Katie Ognovich.

Coach Katie says two main themes this season for the Greensboro team is progress and adaptability. “Learning how to put the best foot forward even in hard situations is key. We haven’t been out on the water for a couple days due to the Hurricane, but the crews made the best of that situation.”

Although Hurricane Michael had well and truly passed through the Triad by Saturday its after effects were still evident. With much of Greensboro still without power many families had left town resulting in both squads operating on limited rosters.

Greensboro showed quick early speed to take the lead in the girls varsity eights race. Experience in the High Point crew carried the morning though in a hard fought race.

The final race of the morning was between middle school eights….which were actually crewed by only 6 rowers in each boat due to limited attendance. After a hard fought battle that saw the lead change constantly, Greensboro finally took home the win.

“The team is focused on making forward progress every single day, even if it’s small. Today the entire team made more progress in which they will build off of starting next week. Everyone enjoyed the racing today, but they know it is just the beginning and the real work has yet to come.

Congratulations all rowers for both races won and battles hard fought!
